Gordon is on his way to Zambia and crossing the great Zambezi River marks an important step in the journey. The Zambezi (meaning “Great River” in the language of the Tonga people) is the fourth longest river in Africa and an important part of people’s livelihood here and food security. To keep the river healthy and its ecosystem balanced, Peace Parks works with local communities to promote sustainable fishing practices. Along its course are the Victoria Falls, one of the world’s greatest natural wonders and a big tourism draw card for both Zambia and Zimbabwe. The Kariba and Cahora Bassa dams, two of Africa’s largest hydroelectric projects depend on this mighty river to function.
