When a wildlife sanctuary was established in Simalaha this body of water was a shallow natural pan. Peace Parks Foundation dredged and deepened the pan to three metres, so it could become a water source for many of the animals that were rewilded there, including red lechwe, sable, roan antelope, buffalo and giraffe. But this is the first year it has completely filled up, and it now holds enough water for the buffalo for the rest of the year. Now that’s a reason to be peaceful.
