The juniper tree (Juniperus procera) is an evergreen and a tropical highland species that flourishes in the rocky higher altitudes of Nyika National Park. In fact, it plays an important part in the history of the park. In 1948 a relic patch of juniper forest, the most southerly stand of this tree in Africa, was proclaimed a forest reserve, and so began the conservation of this incredible habitat. Of course, as Norman explains, the juniper berry is also famously used to flavour gin!
