Wildfires are an important part of maintaining a balanced ecological system. Fires like this can help the immediate areas around them as they increase soil quality and allow new vegetation to grow. This fire in Maputo Special Reserve was started by communities – it is an annual event – most likely to enable their cattle to graze off the green grass flush that comes up after the fire. The fire got out of control however, fuelled by a stiff breeze, but dissipated when it reached a road network.
