Cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) applications to help combat wildlife crime and enhance cross-border security were explored by the Embassy of Sweden in partnership with AI Sweden and Peace Parks Foundation during AI week in Cape Town recently. The event brought together experts from local government, the private sector and academia to discuss Swedish-South African collaborations and future opportunities.
South Africa is navigating a complex political and security environment at present. The existence of illegal wildlife trade in our landscapes is connected to elevated crime in these areas, which impacts communities. As criminals have no respect for national borders, it is imperative for law enforcement to work across them to be more efficient in solving crime. Technology, and AI in particular, can play a significant role in fighting wildlife crimes by accelerating efforts and overcoming resource shortages.
At Peace Parks Foundation, we believe that protecting wildlife is a team effort powered by innovation. This event showed how collaborating with Sweden and applying artificial intelligence can supercharge our fight against wildlife crime. By working together across borders, we can create a safer future for both people and nature.
