Many communities in Simalaha have traded their old cooking practices – using charcoal and large logs on open fires – for fuel-efficient cookstoves that have been provided by a collaboration between Peace Parks Foundation and Commonland. These stoves reduce the consumption of wood and charcoal by approximately 30% and also function well with only a few small twigs. So, the work of finding and carrying firewood is now quick and light work and can now be done by the youngsters.
