The African buffalo is one of the most successful grazers in Africa, usually living for around 20 years in the wild. Its horns are its distinguishing feature, along with its broad chest, large limbs and a massive head. Its horns have a faded base, which forms a continuous shield of bone, referred to here by Gordon as a ‘boss’. Dagga boy is the colloquial term for this buffalo.
