Elephant are fascinating and, like humans, they are socially complex creatures. Male elephant like to hang out with other males of the species from a young age. In fact, at 14 years old they leave their birth families and can join other herds or loosely gather as bachelor herds. Here, the younger male elephant are taught by the older elephant, which is why the stay together. Interestingly, male-dominated herds are usually large when food and resources are abundant. Here, outside of the borders of a national park, the elephant remain at risk; they need the safety of conservation areas to be able to thrive.
