A baby elephant, or calf, stands about 1 metre tall and weighs in around 90 kg. For the first few months they stick close to their mothers for food, warmth and support. The other females in the herd help out too. In fact, when a new calf is born all the females in the group trumpet its arrival! But it is from its parents that the calf learns how to adapt to its surroundings and how to manage their trunks. Strong bonds like these mean it’s vital to keep family herds together during translocations and to provide plenty of space to accommodate the whole group when they are released into their new habitat.
