In this episode of PeaceParks.TV, we ask Aviation Manager and Chief Pilot, Hannes van Wyk, what’s something small in nature that makes a big impact?

Known as our bush encyclopedia, Hannes has the answer to just about any nature-related question in our #AskHannes video series.

Recently, while enjoying his sculpting hobby, Hannes got a little distracted by a carder bee buzzing around his wooden chair. He explains that this time of year is breeding season for these fascinating creatures, and it’s common to spot them searching for a place to lay their eggs.

With some plants containing natural insect repellents, the poor carder bee had limited safe options—so, it turned to Hannes’ wooden chair as its best bet!

While small, carder bees play an essential role in maintaining a balanced ecosystem. Without them and other flying creatures, there would be no pollination, gardens wouldn’t thrive, and many insects and birds would lose their homes. Hannes highlights how often we overlook the importance of smaller animals and insects in keeping ecosystems healthy and balanced.

He also touches on the impact of pesticides. Spraying chemicals to kill insects in gardens can harm the entire ecosystem. Without pesticides, however, gardens tend to flourish, attracting a diverse range of organisms that each play a key role in maintaining overall health.
