The board of the soon to be established Nyika-Vwaza Co-management Trust has been appointed. This board will oversee and guide strategically the protection, restoration and development of two of Malawi’s flagship conservation areas; Nyika National Park and Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve. The Trust is specifically designed as an independent organization to ensure the perpetual inclusive, integrated and efficient management of Nyika, Vwaza and the surrounding communal areas as one cohesive landscape.

In June 2023, the Malawi Government and Peace Parks Foundation committed to this approach by signing a 20 year Co-Management Agreement. This innovative governance model includes a board of 15 Trustees representing the government, communities, the business sector, local authorities and Peace Parks Foundation. This shared decision-making structure aims to balance conservation and local development, ensuring that communities can sustain themselves, wildlife and natural resources are protected, and tourism flourishes.

We are proud to play a role in this pioneering partnership, which paves the way for Malawi’s people and #NatureWithoutBorders to thrive!
