Adventure and Africa are synonymous, especially when getting off the beaten track to explore the continent’s lesser-known spectacles. When visiting a new private campsite perched on the banks of Zambia’s second largest waterfall, Ngonye Falls, Peace Parks Foundation’s Chief Investment Officer, Colin Porteous, doesn’t quite realise what it entails to get there.
The Journey
Colin and the rest of the team head out on foot to visit some of the new tourism development sites in the region. Trained rangers accompany them should they happen to cross paths with any unexpected wildlife, particularly hippos and crocodiles, that are known to frequent these waters.
The fun soon begins when a shallow river crossing lies up ahead. This forces everyone to remove their shoes, roll up their trousers and start wading across a small stream. With wary eyes scanning the water for any signs of crocodiles, the team makes it safely to the other side. From here, they continue their journey to view the magnificent Ngonye Falls.
Tourism Development In Ngonye Falls waterfall
Peace Parks Foundation has been working alongside Zambia’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife and the local communities here to set up tourism infrastructure within the Ngonye Falls Community Partnership Park.
Already, a lot of new infrastructure has been built, including a visitor’s centre, and private campsites, as seen in the video above. There are also whispers of a new luxury lodge that will overlook the spectacular waterfall. After a recent visit to the proposed lodge site, it was established that visitors could partake in a range of exciting water-based activities. This includes fishing, kayaking, swimming and even diving…at your own risk!
Peace Parks Foundation is excited to see the full potential of Ngonye Falls Community Partnership Park come to life and looks forward to welcoming many visitors to enjoy the beauty of this magnificent place.
