PEACE – Peace Parks Exclusive African Conservation Experiences – enables guests to experience the magnificence of the southern African region and gain behind-the-scenes insights into what it takes to conserve these vast landscapes.
Waking up in Anvil Bay, a private and exclusive barefoot beach camp, is a pretty magical experience. The dune forests are alive with the sound of birdsong along the sandy tracks towards the beach. On this remote and untouched stretch of wilderness in Mozambique, it is the birds and animals that leave most of the footprints.
Nestled in the brush on the edge of the beach forest are a handful of wooden cabins with stilted decks. Set up under the shade of canvas is a unique breakfast spot and full kitchen to cater for guests. Sun loungers offer an unparalleled view of the Indian Ocean.
This type of development offers tourism that most aligns with a sustainable future for the region. Catering for small numbers of people, built with sensitivity to the natural surroundings and run by people that live in the region. In fact, that was a founding principle of Anvil Bay, to develop local staff to manage the lodge in the future. The community benefits from their share of the profits whilst concession fees support conservation efforts in the reserve.
Game drives out from Anvil Bay into the bush showcase the unique identity of this park. Inland, behind the sand dunes lies an enormous wilderness. Wetlands, forests and grasslands support a diverse range of wildlife including giraffe, hippos, wildebeest, elephant and much more. It is one of the few places where you can be out in the bush game viewing and also on the ocean in the same day. Only here can you see both of Earth’s largest mammals – the elephant and the whale – on the same day.
Peace Parks Foundation strives passionately for the rewilding of such areas and for the communities to become the true guardians of their natural heritage.
