Trucks, cranes, cameramen. This stage of the translocation needs as much manpower and planning as the rest.
Translocations take months of planning, yet only a few days to carry out. Throughout the planning the safety of the crew and wellbeing of the elephants are the highest priorities, with every precaution taken to ensure a smooth translocation without incident.
Everything is checked and rechecked, but even the weather forecast can change plans.
If there’s too much rain or wind it is usually postponed. Why? Because rain brings muddy tracks and roads, while strong winds can ground choppers.
This time the weather has been perfect. Mild and dry. So, the trucks can make their way over to Zinave National Park. They travel slowly, doing only about 20 kilometres an hour over the rougher terrain to ensure the elephant are not overly stressed.
