Snares are the silent killer of African wildlife. Rangers need to carry out regular snare sweeps to find these wire traps that are often laid in thick bush and hidden carefully along game trails. In Zinave, rangers removed 13,000 snares in 2020 alone! Animals caught in them often have a long, slow and painful death. The terrible thing is that one snare can kill countless animals – it’s not just the intended target such as an antelope that die, but also jackals, elephants, baboons and others that get trapped. It is essential protection work to find and remove all snares from the environment.
