Peace Parks Foundation’s focus in Simalaha is on improving the social, economic and environmental circumstances of the region. Over 1500 farmers in the region have been trained in conservation agriculture, which means growing crops for food whilst also assisting the restoration of the ecology. The cassava you see here at the market is one of these crops, which adds much-needed diversity to a diet that previously consisted primarily of maize. The success of these farming methods can be seen in the quantity of the vegetables brought to market, which means a higher disposable income for the communities, which in turn means more children go to school and their quality of life is improved.
