The Simalaha Community Conservancy in Zambia is one of the poorest in Africa. Severe droughts are common, leading to crop failure which devastates communities.
Peace Parks Foundation is changing that. In partnership with communities in Zambia they have developed a training programme in Conservation Agriculture. Now farmers can learn how to grow crops using all year-round water and how to farm in a way that also benefits the environment.
The donation of treadle pumps is a key component in this already successful programme in which over 1500 farmers have been trained in conservation farming techniques.
Importantly, the treadle pumps, along with innovative methods of agriculture conservation, lead to higher crop yields, huge shifts in lifestyle, enhancing food security within the region as well as supporting livelihood development.
It is a wonderful conservation success story.
